It involves the mechanical removal of plaque and bacterial deposits, creating a local microbial environment in harmony with periodontal health and promoting the replacement of damaged periodontal tissues with collagen-rich connective tissues. This favors a shift in the composition of the oral microbiota from a community dominated by Gram-negatives to one dominated by Gram-positives.
